Mariehamn makes a perfect base for cycling, whatever your fitness level. The island's gentle landscape, well-signed cycling routes and free public ferries make it possible to combine cycling with island-hopping in a way that's hard to find anywhere else in the Nordic region.

Route 1 — Short evening ride (approx. 18 km)

Start at Mariehamn's western harbour and follow the waterfront promenade north towards Ramsholmen nature reserve. Rich birdlife and fine views of the archipelago. The return loop takes you through Mariehamn's park quarter, past cafés and small shops. The ride takes about 1.5 hours and suits any bike, including city bikes.

Route 2 — Medium route via Lemland (approx. 45 km)

One of the most popular rides on Åland. Head south from Mariehamn towards Lemland, cross the Lumparn bridges and return via the coastal road. You'll pass quiet villages, traditional Åland farmsteads and several good swimming rocks along the way. Allow 3–4 hours at a relaxed pace.

Route 3 — Full-day ride with ferry (approx. 65 km + ferry)

Cycle from Mariehamn to Svinö ferry terminal in Lumparland, take the free ferry to Föglö and explore the island's calm roads. Föglö is known for its rolling landscape, red cottages and relatively untouched island life. The ferry back gives your legs a welcome rest.

Rent a bike in Mariehamn if you haven't brought your own. Always check the public ferry timetable at alandstrafiken.ax before planning a route that includes a ferry crossing.
